Sannomiya and Motomachi: the practical entry point to Kobe
Sannomiya and Motomachi connect JR, Hankyu, Hanshin, the shopping streets, former foreign settlement, Nankinmachi, nightlife, and the waterfront.
Sannomiya and Motomachi are the easiest places to start understanding Kobe. JR, Hankyu, and Hanshin meet around Sannomiya, while Motomachi connects to the old shopping street, former foreign settlement, Nankinmachi, and the waterfront. The two stations are within about 10 minutes on foot.
Sannomiya station area
JR, Hankyu, and Hanshin each have separate Sannomiya stations. Transfers require leaving one ticket gate and walking about 5-8 minutes. On rainy days, the Sanchika underground shopping area makes the movement easier.
Sannomiya Center Gai is an east-west shopping street of about 400 m, with clothing, food, cafes, and daily goods. Department stores, Sannomiya OPA, and underground shops sit nearby, so it works for both errands and sightseeing preparation.
Motomachi and the former foreign settlement
Motomachi Station is served by JR and Hanshin. It is one JR stop from Sannomiya for about ¥150, but walking takes only around 10 minutes in good weather.
Motomachi Shopping Street runs about 1.2 km through 6 blocks. Watch shops, furniture stores, imported-food shops, and cafes give it a calmer feel than Sannomiya. Walking south from around 2-chome brings you into the former foreign settlement.
Nankinmachi
Nankinmachi sits south of Motomachi Shopping Street. It covers about 200 m east-west and 110 m north-south, with roughly 100 shops, making it one of Japan’s major Chinatowns along with Yokohama and Nagasaki.
Pork buns cost around ¥200-350 each, fried rice or small dishes around ¥500-700, and sit-down meals around ¥800-2,500 per person. Weekend crowds peak from 11:00 to 14:00, while weekday mornings are easier.
Night food and drinks
Kitano-zaka has cafes and bars that work well from about 19:00 to 23:00. Around Sannomiya Center Gai, izakaya, standing bars, and casual restaurants cluster from about 17:00 to 24:00.
Flower Road becomes quieter at night. Compared with Tokyo nightlife districts, Kobe has fewer shops open after 24:00, so planning around the last train is usually better than assuming deep-night options.
One-day route
Start at Sannomiya Station, walk Motomachi Shopping Street for 30 minutes, spend 30 minutes in the former foreign settlement, take 1 hour for lunch in Nankinmachi, then move to Meriken Park by foot or subway. Finish by climbing toward Kitano-zaka if you still have energy.
The full central route is about 6-8 km and needs little transport money. On rainy days, use the Kaigan Line toward the waterfront and consider a taxi for Kitano’s slope.
