Meieki: Nagoya Station, rail access, and the high-rise office core
Meieki combines shinkansen, JR, Meitetsu, Kintetsu, subway lines, highway buses, underground malls, towers, and Nagoya food in one dense station area.
Nagoya Station is locally called Meieki. The Tokaido Shinkansen, JR conventional lines, Meitetsu, Kintetsu, the Higashiyama and Sakuradori subway lines, and highway buses all converge here, making it the largest transport hub in the Chubu region.
Station layout
JR Central controls the main station, and shinkansen platforms are tracks 14-17. Meitetsu Nagoya Station and Kintetsu Nagoya Station sit south to southwest of the JR station and require about 5-10 minutes on foot.
Tokyo to Nagoya takes 1 hour 34 minutes by Nozomi, with reserved seats around ¥11,300. Shin-Osaka to Nagoya takes 49 minutes and costs around ¥6,680. As the middle city between Tokyo and Osaka, Nagoya has frequent shinkansen service in both directions.
High-rise district
The Sakura-dori Exit opens onto JR Gate Tower and JR Central Towers. Gate Tower opened in 2017 and is 211 m tall, while Central Towers opened in 2000 and reaches 245 m.
Midland Square is about 3 minutes southeast on foot and reaches 247 m, making it Nagoya’s tallest building. The Sky Promenade on floors 44-46 costs about ¥800 and gives wide views over the city and, on clear days, Ise Bay.
Underground malls
Meieki’s underground malls include Esca, Unimall, Gate Walk, and Sun Road. Esca is on the shinkansen side and is food-heavy, while Unimall stretches toward the Sakura-dori side with clothing and daily goods.
First-time visitors often get turned around. Use Sakura-dori Exit and Taiko-dori Exit as the two main compass points. For Nagoya food in a short stop, Esca is the easiest area.
Food around the station
Esca has branches of Yabaton, Atsuta Horaiken, and Misen, making it a compact place for miso katsu, hitsumabushi, and Taiwan ramen. Lunch usually runs ¥1,000-2,500.
The restaurant floors in JR Gate Tower and Central Towers, mainly floors 12-13, have broader options and dinners around ¥3,000-8,000. Before a shinkansen departure, avoid the 12:00-13:00 lunch peak if possible.
