Sakae and Yabacho: Nagoya shopping, nightlife, parks, and museums
Sakae is Nagoya's commercial core, while Yabacho links department stores, Osu, Hisaya-odori Park, MIRAI TOWER, Nishiki 3-chome, and Shirakawa Park.
Sakae is Nagoya’s main commercial center and forms a twin-core structure with Meieki. It is only 2 stops and 5 minutes from Nagoya Station on the Higashiyama Line, but the mood is different: Meieki is rail and office towers, while Sakae is shopping and nightlife.
Sakae shopping
Around the Sakae intersection, major facilities include Mitsukoshi Nagoya Sakae, Matsuzakaya Nagoya, LACHIC, and PARCO. Matsuzakaya traces its history to 1611, while LACHIC opened in 2005 with a younger shopping mix.
Sakaechika underground mall connects Sakae Station with nearby commercial buildings. It is smaller than the Meieki underground network but useful for rain, lunch, and meeting points.
Hisaya-odori Park and MIRAI TOWER
Hisaya-odori Park is the north-south park strip through central Sakae. After the 2020 renovation, the northern section became a combined park and retail area with about 35 shops.
Nagoya TV Tower was built in 1954, stands 180 m tall, and is now called Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER. The observation deck costs about ¥900, and the nighttime lighting runs until 23:00.
Yabacho
Yabacho is one station south of Sakae on the Meijo Line. Matsuzakaya’s main store and PARCO South Building sit nearby, and walking 10 minutes south brings you into Osu.
Yabaton’s main shop is near Yabacho and is one of the clearest places to try miso katsu. The large waraji tonkatsu costs around ¥1,500-2,000.
Nishiki 3-chome at night
Nishiki 3-chome, often called Kin-san, is Nagoya’s largest nightlife and dining district, just north of Sakae Station. Izakaya, bars, snack bars, and restaurants are dense here, though the scale is smaller than Shinjuku in Tokyo.
Sekai no Yamachan and Furaibo both have tebasaki shops in the area, with 5 wings around ¥500-700. Misen’s Sakae branch is also a common late-night stop for Taiwan ramen.
Museums and Shirakawa Park
South of Hisaya-odori Park, Shirakawa Park contains Nagoya City Art Museum and Nagoya City Science Museum. The art museum’s permanent exhibition is about ¥300, and the science museum with planetarium costs about ¥800.
The science museum’s planetarium is one of the world’s largest domes and often sells out on weekends. If you are shopping in Sakae, adding Shirakawa Park can turn the area into a half-day route.
