Maruyama: primeval forest, Hokkaido Shrine, and Sapporo housing

Read Maruyama through the Tozai Line, Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Shrine, Maruyama Zoo, rent, cafes, and a half-day walking route.

Maruyama sits about 2 km west of Odori Park and is reached from Maruyama Koen Station on the Tozai Line. It is one of central Sapporo’s quietest high-end residential areas because it touches parkland, shrine grounds, and primeval forest.

Park and forest

Maruyama Park covers about 68 hectares and connects with the primeval forest around Mount Maruyama, which rises to 225 meters. The trail from the foot to the summit takes about 40 minutes.

The forest includes Hokkaido native trees such as katsura and harunire. From the 225-meter summit, visitors can see central Sapporo and Mount Teine on clear days.

Cherry blossoms arrive late compared with Honshu, usually from late April to early May. Ezo-yamazakura is the local reference point, and weekend hanami rules can change because Sapporo has tightened barbecue restrictions in recent years.

Hokkaido Shrine and zoo

Hokkaido Shrine was founded in 1869 and stands inside the park area. The shrine grounds cover about 180,000 square meters and receive about 800,000 New Year visitors, the largest hatsumode crowd in Hokkaido.

Rokkatei’s shrine teahouse sells Hangan-sama, a grilled rice cake with red bean filling, for about ¥120. It is a small stop, but it is closely tied to the shrine visit route.

Sapporo Maruyama Zoo is north of the park and costs about ¥800. It is smaller than Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, but the polar bear and gorilla areas make it easy to add to a half-day plan from central Sapporo.

Housing and cafes

Maruyama is one of Sapporo’s more expensive rental areas. A 1R can run about ¥50,000 to ¥70,000, roughly 10 to 20 percent higher than some central alternatives.

Ura-sando, the back approach near Hokkaido Shrine, has independent cafes, bakeries, and sweets shops. Morihico is one of Sapporo’s best-known roasters, with a main shop in a renovated old house near Maruyama Koen Station on the Tozai Line.

The attraction is the contrast: Susukino is nightlife, Odori is civic center, and Maruyama is daily life 2 to 4 subway stops from central Sapporo next to trees, shrine paths, and quieter streets.

Half-day route

Start at Maruyama Koen Station, walk about 10 minutes to Hokkaido Shrine, spend 30 minutes worshipping and walking the grounds, then stop at the Rokkatei teahouse.

If weather is good, climb Mount Maruyama as a 1.5-hour round trip. Add Maruyama Zoo for 1 to 1.5 hours, then finish with coffee along Ura-sando before taking the subway back to Odori.

The route takes about 4 to 5 hours without rushing. In winter, add at least 20 minutes for icy paths and check zoo hours before leaving.
