Odori and Sapporo Station: underground routes and the snowy city core
Sapporo's center runs about 1 km between JR Sapporo Station and Odori, connected by Chi-Ka-Ho, underground malls, Odori Park, and grid addresses.
Sapporo has about 1.97 million people and is Hokkaido’s only true metropolis. Its center runs along the roughly 1 km axis between JR Sapporo Station and Odori. From December to March, underground walking routes become the practical arteries of the city.
Sapporo Station
JR Sapporo Station is Hokkaido’s rail hub. The Hakodate Main Line, Chitose Line, and Gakuentoshi Line meet here, and the Rapid Airport train reaches New Chitose Airport in about 37 minutes for ¥1,150, usually every 15 minutes.
Station-linked facilities include JR Tower, Daimaru Sapporo, and Stellar Place. JR Tower is 173 m tall, and the T38 observation deck costs ¥740. Esta closed in 2023 and is under redevelopment.
Odori
Odori is an east-west park strip through central Sapporo, about 1.5 km long and 65 m wide. Odori Station is the subway interchange for the Namboku, Tozai, and Toho lines.
Odori Park hosts the Sapporo Snow Festival in early February, YOSAKOI Soran Festival in June, Sapporo Autumn Fest in September-October, and the Munich Christmas Market in November-December. Sapporo TV Tower is 147 m tall and costs about ¥1,000 to enter.
Underground walking space
Chi-Ka-Ho connects JR Sapporo Station and Odori Station underground. It opened in 2011 and runs about 520 m, letting people move between the 2 centers without going outside in snow.
Pole Town runs about 400 m from Odori toward Susukino, while Aurora Town extends east from Odori. Together with Chi-Ka-Ho, the central underground network is about 2 km long.
Grid addresses
Sapporo addresses use a grid such as “North 5 West 3.” The origin is the intersection of Odori and the Sosei River, with north-south and east-west numbers marking blocks.
For taxis and navigation, giving the grid address is often clearer than saying only a neighborhood name. Think of north as the Sapporo Station direction, south as Susukino, and east-west as measured from the Sosei River.
From Sapporo Station
| Destination | Transport | Time | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otaru | JR rapid | 32 min | ¥750 |
| New Chitose Airport | Rapid Airport | 37 min | ¥1,150 |
| Asahikawa | Kamui limited express | 1h 25m | ¥4,690 |
| Hakodate | Hokuto limited express | 3h 30m | ¥9,440 |
| Furano | JR + bus | About 2h 30m | ¥2,300 |
In Sapporo, the first practical question is how to connect Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino. In winter, underground access can matter more than the distance on a flat map.
