Kanazawa city scale: walking, loop buses, and rainy-day routes

Central Kanazawa is compact, but slopes near Kenrokuen, frequent rain, and real distances between sights make the loop bus and local buses essential.

Kanazawa’s central sightseeing area is roughly 3 km east-west and 2 km north-south. That sounds walkable, but the slopes around Kenrokuen, about 180 rainy days per year, and the distance between major sights make buses part of the normal route, not a backup.

On a dry day with light luggage, walking from Kanazawa Station to Omicho Market is easy. On rainy days or in winter, a taxi from Kanazawa Station to Kenrokuen costs around ¥1,000 and can save the first hour of the day.

Kanazawa Loop Bus

The Castle Town Kanazawa Loop Bus starts from the east side of Kanazawa Station and runs past the main sightseeing areas. There are clockwise and counterclockwise routes. A single ride costs ¥200, and a one-day pass costs ¥600.

Service usually runs from around 08:30 to 18:00. On weekends and holidays, buses may come every 10-15 minutes; on weekdays or in low season, waits can stretch toward 30 minutes. Prepare cash or the one-day pass, because IC-card support is not something to assume on every tourist bus.

Hokutetsu local buses

Hokuriku Railroad buses cover ordinary city routes beyond the tourist loop. From platforms 8 and 9 at Kanazawa Station East Exit, buses head toward Kenrokuen, Higashi Chaya, Korinbo, Katamachi, and residential areas.

The central flat fare is about ¥200. Hokutetsu’s ICa card is local, and some routes also support major transport IC cards such as Suica. For housing areas, supermarkets, and non-tourist destinations, Hokutetsu buses are more useful than the loop bus.

Machi-nori and weather

Kanazawa’s bike-share system, Machi-nori, has about 60 ports and around 500 bicycles near Kanazawa Station, Katamachi, Kenrokuen, and other central points. The basic fare is about ¥100 per 30 minutes, with a daily cap around ¥500.

Cycling is practical in spring and autumn, but December-March snow and heavy rain make it unreliable. Kanazawa Station’s Motenashi Dome covers the front plaza, so it is a good place to regroup, sort luggage, or wait for a taxi during bad weather.

Living beyond sightseeing

For daily life in the center, Omicho, Korinbo, Katamachi, and the Kenrokuen side can work with walking and bicycles. Outside the central area, bus frequency falls and many supermarkets are positioned for car access.

For a longer stay, treat Kanazawa as a city where the center is walkable but the suburbs are car-oriented. Before choosing housing, check the last bus, winter snow clearing, and the real walking distance to a supermarket.
