Omicho Market and Kanazawa Station: arrival, lunch, and Hokuriku links
Kanazawa Station and Omicho Market are about 1.5 km apart, making them a practical first-day route for luggage, lunch, buses, shinkansen transfers, and souvenirs.
Kanazawa Station and Omicho Market are about 1.5 km apart, or roughly 15 minutes on foot. A practical first day is to store luggage at the station, eat lunch at Omicho, then move toward Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle, or Higashi Chaya in the afternoon.
Kanazawa Station East Exit
The East Exit is the sightseeing side of Kanazawa Station. Tsuzumi Gate and the Motenashi Dome sit in front of the station, with the tourist information center, Loop Bus stops, taxi stands, and coin lockers close by.
Coin lockers usually cost around ¥400-700, with 12-hour or 24-hour options depending on size and machine. Loop buses often use platforms 7 and 8, while Hokutetsu sightseeing-direction buses use nearby platforms such as 8 and 9, so check the platform before leaving the station building.
Hokuriku Shinkansen
The Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Kanazawa in 2015, reducing Tokyo-Kanazawa travel time sharply. In March 2024, the line extended to Tsuruga, changing the transfer pattern for Osaka and Nagoya.
| Origin | Train | Time | Reserved-seat fare guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | Kagayaki | 2h 28m | ¥13,850 |
| Tokyo | Hakutaka | 3h 10m-3h 40m | ¥13,850 |
| Shin-Osaka | Thunderbird + shinkansen | About 2h 30m | ¥7,350 |
| Nagoya | Shirasagi + shinkansen | About 2h 20m | ¥6,360 |
After March 2024, passengers from Osaka and Nagoya transfer at Tsuruga from limited express trains to the shinkansen. With large luggage, leave extra minutes for the platform change.
Omicho Market structure
Omicho Market has about 280 years of history and is known as Kanazawa’s kitchen. The covered market streets and Omicho Ichibakan building together contain about 180 shops, including seafood sellers, produce shops, sushi counters, seafood-bowl restaurants, and souvenir stores.
From 08:00 to 09:00, the market still feels local and practical. Tourist lunch lines peak from 10:00 to 13:00. The first floor is better for browsing fresh food, while the second floor of the market building is easier for sitting down to eat.
Kanazawa Hyakubangai
Kanazawa Hyakubangai is the station shopping area, divided into Anto, Rinto, and Anto West. It gathers wagashi, gold-leaf goods, Kutani ware, Kaga Yuzen small items, local sake, and ekiben in one place.
Anto usually runs from about 08:30 to 20:00, with restaurants open until around 21:00. Before a shinkansen departure, it is the easiest place to compare souvenirs, but weekend evening checkout lines can use up 15 minutes quickly.
Hokuriku connections
From Kanazawa Station, Fukui is about 20 minutes by Hokuriku Shinkansen and Toyama about 18 minutes. Shirakawa-go takes about 1 hour 15 minutes by highway bus, while Wajima is around 2 hours by Hokutetsu express bus under normal conditions.
Wajima was heavily damaged by the Noto Peninsula earthquake of January 2024, and transport or business hours may change. For trips toward Noto, check current information from Kanazawa City and transport operators before booking.
