Higashiyama: Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Nanzen-ji, and Kyoto's temple belt

From Kiyomizu-dera to Ginkaku-ji, Higashiyama concentrates temples, teahouse streets, Gion, Nanzen-ji, and the Philosopher's Path.

Higashiyama follows Kyoto’s eastern foothills, from Kiyomizu-dera in the south to Ginkaku-ji in the north. It contains Kyoto’s densest belt of temples, shrine approaches, teahouse streets, and preserved neighborhoods, but the experience depends heavily on timing.

Kiyomizu-dera to Yasaka Shrine

Kiyomizu-dera’s main hall has the famous wooden stage about 13 m above the slope. Admission is ¥400 and the temple opens at 06:00. From Gojo-zaka or Chawan-zaka, the uphill walk takes about 15 minutes.

The classic route continues through Kiyomizu-zaka, Ninen-zaka, Sannen-zaka, Nene-no-michi, Kodai-ji, and Yasaka Shrine. It is about 2 km and takes 30 minutes on foot, but 2-3 hours with temple visits and photos. On weekends, Ninen-zaka can become hard to move through after 10:00.

Gion

Gion sits west of Yasaka Shrine and is one of Kyoto’s five kagai entertainment districts. Hanamikoji is the main street, with teahouses, ryotei, stone paving, and lattice facades.

Since 2019, some private lanes around Hanamikoji have posted photography bans, with fines of ¥10,000 in certain areas. Do not stop maiko or geiko for photos, and do not enter teahouse curtains or doorways without permission.

Nanzen-ji to the Philosopher’s Path

From Keage Station on the Tozai Line, Nanzen-ji is about 10 minutes on foot. The grounds are free, while the Hojo Garden and Sanmon gate access are each around ¥600. The red-brick Suirokaku aqueduct from the Meiji period is a popular photo point.

The Philosopher’s Path runs about 2 km along the canal toward Ginkaku-ji. It is especially strong in cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons, and weekdays are calmer than southern Higashiyama. Ginkaku-ji admission is ¥500.

Kennin-ji and Rokuharamitsu-ji

Kennin-ji was founded in 1202 and is Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple. Admission to the main buildings is about ¥600, and the highlights include the Wind and Thunder Gods screen reproduction and the twin-dragon ceiling painting.

Rokuharamitsu-ji sits west of Kiyomizu-dera and costs about ¥600 to enter. The statue of Kuya Shonin, with 6 small Buddhas emerging from the mouth to represent chanting, is one of the most distinctive sculptures in the area.

One-day route

Enter Kiyomizu-dera at 06:00, descend Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka before 08:00, then continue to Yasaka Shrine, Hanamikoji, and Kennin-ji. After lunch, move to Nanzen-ji, the aqueduct, the Philosopher’s Path, and Ginkaku-ji.

The full route is about 7 km and takes 6-8 hours. Admissions for Kiyomizu-dera, Kennin-ji, Nanzen-ji paid areas, and Ginkaku-ji total roughly ¥2,500-3,000, before any special night-viewing fees.
