Sapporo food: seafood, dairy, soup curry, miso ramen, and lamb
Sapporo gathers Hokkaido seafood, dairy, vegetables, soup curry, miso ramen, jingisukan, and pork rice bowls in one city.
Hokkaido produces about 14% of Japan’s agricultural output, around 55% of its milk, and around 85% of its butter. Sapporo gathers seafood, dairy, vegetables, and meat from across the island, making it the easiest place to sample Hokkaido food in one trip.
Seafood
Sapporo receives seafood from both the Sea of Japan side and the Pacific side. Hair crab may cost ¥3,000-8,000, snow crab in November-March can cost ¥5,000-15,000, and uni in June-August often costs ¥2,000-4,000 per plate.
Nijo Market is about 10 minutes on foot east of Odori and has around 60 shops. It is convenient but tourist-priced. The Curb Market beside the central wholesale market is also used by locals, with seafood bowls around ¥1,800-3,500.
Soup curry
Soup curry is a Sapporo-born dish, with roots in the 1970s and national popularity from the 2000s. It serves a thin curry soup with large vegetables and chicken leg or pork, with rice on the side.
A bowl usually costs ¥1,200-1,800, and many shops let you choose detailed spice levels such as 0-40. Suage is known for fried vegetables, Okushiba Shoten for shrimp broth, and Picante for spicier styles. Sapporo has about 200 soup-curry specialty shops.
Dairy and sweets
Hokkaido dairy is one of Sapporo’s easiest strengths to enjoy. Kinotoya soft serve costs about ¥400, while Milk Mura near Susukino combines ice cream with milk liqueurs.
LeTAO started in Otaru but has Sapporo shops, and Kinotoya cheese tarts are a standard local sweet. Yotsuba’s direct shop at New Chitose Airport is useful for milk, soft serve, and last-minute dairy souvenirs.
Miso ramen
Sapporo ramen is usually miso-based, with medium-thick curly noodles, butter, and corn. It differs sharply from Hakata’s thin tonkotsu noodles or Tokyo’s clear soy-sauce ramen. A bowl costs about ¥850-1,100.
Sumire and Junren are rich miso classics, while Saimi and Menya Yukikaze represent newer popular styles. Susukino’s Ramen Yokocho has 17 shops in one narrow lane and is easy for a first visit.
Jingisukan and pork bowls
Jingisukan lamb barbecue is common both in restaurants and at home. In Sapporo supermarkets, raw lamb often costs ¥300-600 per 100 g, and locals eat it more often than visitors expect.
Butadon pork rice bowls come from Obihiro. Charcoal-grilled pork slices with sweet-savory sauce over rice cost around ¥900-1,300 in Sapporo specialty shops.
