Sapporo nature: mountains, skiing, hot springs, lakes, and wildlife

Sapporo is a 2-million-person city where about 60% of the municipality is forested mountain land, putting hikes, ski slopes, lakes, and wildlife close to daily life.

Sapporo covers 1,121 square kilometers, and about 60% of the municipality is forested mountain land. From Odori, you can reach trailheads in about 20 minutes by subway, and in winter, ski areas are 30-40 minutes from the center by car.

Mt. Moiwa’s summit observatory is one of Sapporo’s 3 major night-view points. The ropeway and mini cable car round trip costs about ¥2,100 and normally operates during the snowy season.

Skiing

Sapporo is rare for a large city because ski slopes are close. Sapporo Teine is about 40 minutes by car and a day pass costs around ¥5,600. Sapporo Kokusai is about 60 minutes away and costs around ¥5,100. Moiwayama Ski Area is about 30 minutes by streetcar and bus and costs around ¥3,000.

Bankei is about 20 minutes by car from the center. If you go farther, Niseko is about 2 hours by car and Kiroro about 1 hour, both known internationally for snow quality.

Summer outdoors

From June to September, Sapporo temperatures often sit around 20-30C, making it one of Japan’s easier summer cities. Jozankei is a hot-spring area about 26 km south of Sapporo, about 75 minutes by bus, with day bathing around ¥800-1,500.

Lake Shikotsu is about 50 km south of Sapporo and is known for very clear water. Canoe and kayak experiences often cost ¥5,000-8,000. In January-February, the Ice Festival uses lake water to create frozen sculptures.

Wildlife

Ezo squirrels appear in places such as Maruyama Park, while red foxes and Ezo deer are common near the city edge. Drivers should be careful around dusk and at night because deer can enter roads.

Brown bear activity rises from June to October, and Sapporo issues sighting information for mountain-edge areas. Hikers should carry a bear bell, which costs about ¥500-1,500 at outdoor shops, and avoid entering forest alone without checking recent reports.

Day trips

Jozankei Onsen takes about 75 minutes by bus, Otaru 32 minutes by rapid JR train, and Lake Shikotsu 60-80 minutes by bus or car. Shakotan is about 2 hours by car, while Niseko takes 2-2.5 hours.

In Sapporo, nature is not a distant excursion. Footwear, weather, bear information, and whether you have a car determine how much of the surrounding landscape you can use.
